London Docks, Nocturne in Blue Jack D. Pountney
It is interesting to find that Pountney often worked on a vertical format when conveying a reticent, even melancholy, mood - as here, in this painting of the docks, with their barges and cranes, at the end of a day; or, indeed, at the end of their useful lives. The combination of format and the sombre blue tones creates a memorable composition - somewhat Whistlerian in character - redolent of the water, mud, oil, sweat and energy which has now been eclipsed by the twilight and by the passage of time.
