Landscape with Reds V Roger Cecil
Evocative and poetic, this is - like so many of Cecil's best pictures - a contemplation of a landscape, a summation of feelings and images. The strong red and green - scrubbed and rubbed into the surface of the paper - are complemetaries and so mutually intensify the strength of one another. Likewise, the play with white and black is startling. The whole picture is full of a powerful dynamism. This is a landscape of the imagination, but the imagination has been shaped by a long pattern of human habitation and use, as well as by native geologies and histories.
