Portrait of a Friend Edward Handley-Read
Handley-Read was an admirable artist (and father to the equally interesting Charles, enthusiast for Victorian art and architecture, years before it was fashionable) and we have encountered one or two portraits by him, especially of family and friends, which are full of delight. To have captured and conveyed the character of this gentleman - a bit of a bounder and undoubtedly full of bonhomie - is about as good as it gets. A small painting and yet so full of personality - communicated by the delicious paint itself as well as the cheery gaze of the sitter - it is a joy.
